Uvita and Dominical sit on the south Pacific's slower middle, where Costa Ballena gives the coast its name. At low tide a hooked sandbar shows up that reads like a whale's tail from above. Humpbacks pass through twice a year. In the rainy season the surfers arrive when the swell hits Dominical, along with families who want the Pacific without the dry-forest dryness of Guanacaste. The town runs on a few cross-streets and one long beach, and the people who land here have usually come for long enough to actually unwind into it. Readings sit well between the morning low tide and the afternoon rain.
